Why Does Jem Destroy Mrs. Dubose's Flower Garden?

The mint I grew in my garden. Could I dry the flowers? I'm thinking they would be pretty to use in cocktails etc. Anyone else done this before? All I can find online is information about drying the leaves.

I'm not sure about drying but I bet they'd stay cute if you froze them in icecubes, and that's a nice thing for cocktails.

That would be fabulous. Definitely trying that!

that is a good question...interesting to read some info on that. mine is blooming too, will go and try how they taste. i recently learned that rosemary flowers are edible. i love them and used it as topping for deserts or salads. they are delicious.

Ooh I forgot about Rosemary flowers! They're so pretty too, none of mine has flowered yet but hopefully it will! My sage has flowered beautifully so I'm going to see if I can dry that along with the mint

Give it a try! I'm sure they'd dry, I'm just not sure how well they would keep their flavor. You could also make a mint simple syrup and add the flowers once you've strained out the leaves. The syrup could be frozen if you need it to keep.

level 2

Oh that's a good idea. I mainly wanted to keep the flowers on the sprig and put the whole thing in as a garnish but I could use some mint syrup too! When my lavender bushes have produced more I'm going to make a syrup from them too so may as well do mint while I'm at it.

Oh dear, I had no idea this sub existed.. Do you know what you've started?

You planted mint in your garden? You sick bastard.

But yes. Mint flowers are edible. I float them on a cocktail called "The Bees Knees" (well a twist from the r/cocktails sub I found a few years ago). The flowers are a little to small to pull off and float individually but a dried sprig works nicely.

level 2

Haha! I planted it in a bucket and then planted to bucket in my herb garden to avoid the mint spreading too much. Apparently my great grandmother used to do the same and it's worked so far.

I'm more wondering if they dry nicely, like I'm not sure how the flowers will look once dried. But I've chopped and hung them now so we will see!

Definitely trying the cocktail!

Dry them as you would any other dried flower with a desicant for aesthethic but they wont be flavourful. If you dry them as you would herbs they wont be as pretty but will retain their flavour and if you're lucky some seeds too.

level 2

Yeah I'm not worried if I don't have the flavour so I thought I'd just cut them and give it a go. Seeds would be awesome!
